This site is dedicated to providing educators and cultural workers resources to help implement lessons, discussions and activities in the classroom and community about Día de los Muertos/Day of the Dead.
This website was sparked by an "Altar Competition" in the PSJA ISD elementary & middle schools sponsored by the Center for Mexican American Studies at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV)and The City of San Juan, Texas that is held as part of the city's Día de los Muerto's Celebration in 2016. The website was created and edited by Stephanie Alvarez, Associate Professor of Latinx & Mexican American Studies at UTRGV.
All the content was created by students in the Mexican American Studies program. The content was created with teachers in mind. This means that the students created short informative bilingual powerpoint that are grade appropriate to help introduce Día de los Muertos as a Social Studies / Culture lesson focused on the indigenous aspects of the practice. Moreover, at least two art activities are included per grade level that may be carried out so that all grade levels may produce something to include in the altar.
